No problems with the economy for these guys. Less people paying ? Raise the rates to make up the difference . Verizon customers get hit the hardest, $360 early termination ? ouch.

Price Increases
December 22, 2009
The past few days we have been looking at pricing changes coming to Dish Network, the new simplification of the rates have been very confusing to many folks including myself. As I talk more and more to people that work for Dish it appears we are not the only ones confused.

Some folks are upset about the Dish price changes (all while the rumor is that Dish will not be increasing the cost of its programming fees.) and are saying that if Dish raises rates then they will look at moving away from Dish to other providers such as AT&T’s UVERSE service or Verizon’s FiOS service.

Folks looking to move to those service might be disappointed to learn that both services will also be increasing their rates in the new year.

In two leaks both posted to DSLReports.COM it was noted that AT&T UVERSE customers will see a $3 to $5 increase in their bills when new prices go into effect on February 1st, 2010. In addition AT&T announced that the Filipino TV package is changing from $21 a month to $25. New UVERSE customers will be charged a $29 one time service activation fee.

The price increases for Verizon’s FiOS service seemed the most severe with leaked documents showing that customers can look forward to a rate hike of $10 to $20 depending which bundle the customer is subscribed to.

In addition some new FiOS customers can look forward to a $360 early termination fee if they decide to leave the service. The contract however is pro rated and decreases for every month a customer has service.

While nothing has leaked out about a price increase coming to DirecTV, we have heard from various sources that a rate increase is coming and will take effect in March. Commercial DirecTV will be paying more soon as dealers are reporting to me that packages such as the commercial In Room Choice package will be going from $270 a month to $285 a month, commercial locals from $34.99 to $39.99 and ESPN is going from $3.85 to $4.25. With the commercial rates having such a sharp increase one can only ponder whats in store for DirecTV residential customers.

Meh, nothing unusual here IMO. A lot of things go up in price from year to year.

Accept certain inalienable truths. Prices will rise, politicians will philander, you too will get old, and when you do you'll fantasize that when you were young prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders.

I saw this from Comcast every year, now I get to see it from AT&T. The only difference, is that AT&T U-Verse is actually good service so I won't mind.

This is expected - everything increases in price every year or every other year. What makes it hurt this time around are most companies aren't handing out bonuses, profit sharing, raises, etc this year. :(

Maybe you'll have a trust fund, maybe you'll have a wealthy spouse; but, you never know when either one will run out.

Is there some sort of initial subsidy for equipment that verizon charges the etf for?

It costs Verizon on the order of $5000 for EACH install.
At least it did 3 years ago.. dunno about now.

Unless Verizon is charging you $5000 to install.. they're losing money for the first 5 years of service. It only makes sense they'll charge you a EFT if you leave before contract is up.

everything is going up, it does every year...my trash bill just increased $25 a year and I'm sure I'll see the same with water, electric and gas....just par for the course.

This happens every single year. The networks raise their rates, so the providers follow.

You have just reported that the sky is blue

no what?
no it didn't cost the $5000 per install? prove it cuz when i applied to Verizon FIOS support, which was HQ's outside of Syracuse, NY, (fayetville i believe)that was what they had in their training manual.

or no it doesn't make sense to charge an eft to recoup some of their loss?

Every year bandwidth gets cheaper and cheaper. The same with electronic components.
And every year cable tv prices go up far more than the inflation rate.

Does not compute.

because bandwidth and electronic components have nothing to do with tv prices.

the fact that tv stations want more money for a provider to broadcast their service is what drives up the rates.

Just use over the air digital Tv for free. No need to worry about a "cable" bill.
With Comcast buying NBC we will probably see one of the ota channels either disappear or become unwatchable.
After all, why would Comcast want people to have a free ota channel when they are in the business of charging for cable?

Yeah, because the cable companies only have a monoply and can't dictate to cable channels prices.

/sarcasm

I guess the YES network in NY City really showed them!
/ok, I lied. this is the end of the sarcasm

Unfortunately the TV companies are just demanding higher prices or they will pull their channels from the providers. The providers basically have no power at all.

Time Warner has this site up that addresses it:
