Cable router question: bandwidth

My new roommate and I got into a discussion/argument over our cable internet access earlier today. We're both pretty much net junkies, playing online games, surfing, downloading etc etc. Now we're about to order our cable installation before we move in and he wants to get two seperate cable modems, two seperate connections, which of course doubles the cost. I personally don't think it will slow down our connection enough to warrant paying double... but who knows, I've never dealt with the network situation before, so what do you think?

If I could afford it, I would do that as well..

but take note of this.. you are going to have high installation costs in order for the cable company to install the proper cabling and whatever else they have to do, to accomodate for two seperate broadband connections..

I'm not sure exactly though.. can anyone clarify this??

Yep, unless u download music and pron all day, u wont notice it probably wont then either). Their are companies with 100s of computers connected to a router and sharing less then t1 bandwiadth, so I would not worry about paying for 2.

I believe on a TDM based cable network everyone is on the same loop, meaning that no extra cable would be needed because youre all sharing the same theoritical bandwidth on the same wires, same reason why if the guy down the block uncaps his cable modem everyone else on that cable node perishes, theres no dedicated loops in home cable modem technology that I know off. You will have to pay double, however twice the upstream would be nice.

Upstream speed is the only difference you would really notice. I'd save the $$ for something else:)
Of course, you could get two accounts, and one of these, drool:p

I'd not take the advice. never get a router... unless you want to get completely frustrated which only lead you to commit sucide. If you're a net junkie then its definite you don't wanna get a router. Get a hub instead and get 2 ips. This way if you wanna play games upload files, you won't have any problems. Trust me on this. I've had enough with my shitty ass router which was the highest rated router for some reason. Linksys SUCKS ASS. The $150 piece of brick is nothing but junk!

I still can't believe a diamond member suggested such a bad idea. Router and online games does not mix well.

Cable connect + Router + online games != fun

Extra IP is usually $5/month and it's not exactly an IP always as they are running low on them. I game with my router without any problems.

routers work absoultey fine with online games, of course it would require you to have the patience and INTELLIGENCE to configure it properly... Millions of SOHO routers are sold a year... must be because they suck right?

Dont pay any attention to snowpeas, he's just venting frustrations or something.. cable modems usually are not capped on download speed so getting two will not increase your download capabilities over a single one... you will however double your upload speed usually. I'd suggest buying a router and a single line and use it for a month, if you dont like it then get a second one... the cost of a month of service is as much as a cheap router anyway.

Dude,

You must of had a "DU" error on your linksys router, thats why you couldnt game. thats "Defective User" and that person is you sir.
Secondly r u saying that this user should run no firewall or any sort of security provided by most broadband routers today. Get a clue pal.

No router, huh? No firewall, either? Probably don't need to worry about it if you're not online. I've never had a problem with any of the Linksys gear. Might be a short somewhere between the keyboard and the mouse.

Did you look into DSL? It may very well be cheaper to split the cost of a higher speed DSL connection then to get 2 seperate cable connections. With others saying getting 2 IPs for the cable, I say this:
REMEMBER: Getting 2 IPs on cable DO NOT EQUAL 2 TIMES the BANDWIDTH.

But, if your new location is close enough, a high quality DSL connection will cost about $80 for 1.5 down/768 up. Cable doesn't usually come near those speeds anymore. Most people I know are only getting about 200-400 kbits per sec on cable now, which is only about 2 times slower then SPLITTING the DSL.

I use a router and I'm HEAVILY into games. I've NEVER had a problem with stuff like that. I use AIM/ICQ, and even IRC and FTP fairly often. No problems at all.

Granted you cannot host games behind a router unless you do some type of port forwarding or configure DMZ, but that's not a problem. Just let the other guy host.

The previous guy probably just didn't realize that you can't really host behind a router without some configurations :)

As for the cable thing, yeah since you share the bandwidth anyway regardless of if you get separate connections or not (because the cable company shares bandwidth across your whole neighborhood), its not gonna really matter getting them seperate or not.

But I also 2nd that other guys reccomendation for DSL. You can get 1500mbps download and 256 upload from DSL for often $50 a month or less. That $80 price is for a higher upload rate, 768. For DSL, you pretty much always get that bandwidth in all sitations and if you and your buddy got separate DSL lines, you would each get that much bandwidth.

Well its really up to you i guess. If you want to take your chances, go ahead since other people seems to enjoy themselves w/ a router.

And wtf is a DU error? u fooker i know how to use it. Do you think that its my fault when i reset the the router and it still sends corrupted files? i think not. Even tried it on my friends computer. You're obiously not in my shoes so stfu and stop making stupid acroynoms.

wtf is that sh*t? routers are not firewall perse, it just hides your computer because ur computer would be using the internal ip so your computer is not as easily hackable, but hackers can still scan for open ports, and when you set ur computer on dmz the so called "firewall" that you so depend on will not be effective. Know your sh*t b4 u talk. Xtremetechie I guess you're not that extreme, else you'd know ur sh*t.

Yeah, if money isn't a problem and you're able to get those speeds, i.e. close enough to the CO, then I'd go with DSL. OTOH, I couldn't imagine maxing out my cable connection. I average 300kbps downloads. Even if you're both tapping the modem fully, simultaneously, you'll see downloads between 150-200kbps per computer. There are a number of sites that don't even have that sort of upload capability.

If you 2 both have own tel lines, both should get DSL.
It's just $35/month for 1.5M/384K SBS Yahoo DSL now.
Then both get own IP, own DSL modem, no need to buy a router and worry anything.

Or 1 get DSL, 1 get Cable,
then you 2 can share the basic cable tv signal.
When one of them is down, you 2 still can go online by the other one.

No offense dude, but u are the one who seems to not know what he is talkng about.
Dont blame anyone else if you can not properly config (or at the least, RMA) a defective router.
