Cable quality make that much of a difference on a KVM?

I've just got my KVM switch setup between my two systems (got the D-Link from Newegg). Functionality wise it's going great, but my monitor's image quality looks like sh!t. I've got ghosting and artifacts all over the screen (It looks like my desktop is a compressed JPEG). It gets less noticeable as I drop resolution (the effect is gone once I get down to 800x600, but I use 1280x1024). Would this likely be attributed to cheapo cables (I got them off of E-bay for next to nothing) or is this just common with KVM's. Any help is greatly appreciated.

There will always be signal loss, but the better the cables, the better I've found the picture quality. The cables that came with my Linksys unit appear to be very high quality and my signal loss is minimal. (picture just slightly dimmer, no ghosting at all)

Well I have noticed some sites selling seperate cable sets, one as the regular VGA KVM set and one as the High Resolution VGA KVM set (and my cables look to be thiner than either), so I'm guessing it's the cables. Guess I'll be buying another set. Man I wanted to have all this stuff setup permanently this weekend.
