Cable or Satellite?

Getting tired of just having 5 channels on my television and I also wanted to setup a HTPC and start doing some cool stuff. I don't want anything fancy, just the most basic lineup that includes local channels.

Trying to decide which one to get... I'm leaning a lot more towards Dish Network.

Reasons why I would go with Dish:
* Cheapest ($32/month for basic)
* Portable (if I move out of the house I can take it with me??)

Couple questions though, I have two rooms to hook up to the dish... they are both on opposite sides of the house and the house is not wired for cable/sat. Do I need a receiver for both rooms or does one do both?

Also, if in my room I get two tv tuners on my computer, can satellite tv cable be split like cable television can?

Thanks.

Edit:

Plans in my area
--------------------
comcast - $47.50/month
dish - $32/month
direcTV - $42/month

From my experience with Directv.

Each tv needs its own receiver unless you want to watch the same thing on both TVs. You can not split satellite feed at your computer. You need to run separate wires from a multiplexer to your pc and to your tv, which you would need a receiver for your computer as well.

Cable is most likely your best bet for ease of install/use in these cases.

Satellite looks better, no doubt.
Cable costs less up front (zero) You don't own the equipment, so when it breaks, you just exchange it at your local cable office.
If satellite breaks, you either have to wait until they send you a new one if your renting the equipment, or you buy a new one.

Plus there's that Roadrunner thing.

The only thing that satellite has, IMO, over cable is superior picture quality and is all digital. The monthly cost is practically a wash.

If you live in Phillyland you should get satellite just so you don't give your money to those Comcast sh!theads.

Yeah, but cable costs a lot more than satellite... :(

Plus if move out of my house in the next few months I don't want to leave my parents with a bill they don't want.

In terms of "portability" I wouldn't think there is any difference between DirecTV and Dish. They use the same basic technology and if you are doing the install yourself there is nothing to stop you from moving it with you. I have an old Sony SAT A2 that I use with a PC. I can control the satellite box through a serial cable and have it hooked in to a Hauppauge WinTV PVR 350. I also have cable hooked in to this same machine since I don't get the local networks from DirecTV.

Not only do they not care if you take it with you when you move, I know DTV (and I think Dish) will install a dish at your new house free of charge. I guess they figure if someone moves into a house that already has a dish installed, they may be more likely to choose satellite over cable.

I have cable for local channels and internet. I have satellite (direct tv) for my major channel surfing, NFL Sunday Ticket, and use the music channels for satellite radio.

I would suggest pricing out the bottom plan on both Direct and Dish...I think Dish is a little cheaper these days. Cable is alright, but they charge you like $20-40 installation and another $20-40 to get it disconnected. The whole thing is a scam. Their monthly charges are way too high and they continually try to rip people off. Cable sucks....not to say satellite is too much better....

I switched from Comcast cable to Dish network in January, and would NEVER consider going back. I had very basic cable, and have very basic Dish (America's Top 60), with no premium movie channels. The Dish is about $10.00/month cheaper than the similar lineup on Comcast, plus the picture is 10 times better! And, if you haven't experienced a DVR yet, you're in for a treat. Dish provided all my equipment and installation at no cost, plus I got my first month's programming free. There was no contract to sign -- I can terminate any time I want.

Dish starts with a Dual Tuner with a built in DVR. If you only want 2 TV's set up, it is perfect. They will run a cable from the Dish to your Dual Tuner box, which is normally located at the primary TV. The Dual Tuner has two outputs which allow you to watch 2 different shows at the same time. One output is connected to the primary TV, the other to the secondary TV. If you already have cable, they will tie into it for the second TV. If not, I'm not sure if installation includes running the second cable -- you may have to DIY or pay for it. I actually daisey chained the secondary TV in the computer room with one in my son's room. When he goes to bed, he can control what he wants to watch on that TV, while we watch something else on the primary TV. The primary TV is controlled with an infrared remote -- you have to be pointing the remote somewhere near the Dual Tuner box. The secondary TV is controlled with a UHF remote -- it can be on the opposite side of the house and will work the tuner just fine.

Now -- the DVR. This feature will add $5.00/month to your bill, but would be a bargain at 3x the price. It can record up to 100 hours of TV shows. There are a couple ways of setting it up -- both extremely easy. Dish has an on-screen schedule of everything that is currently on, plus everything coming on in the next 7-10 days. You can set up "favorites" lists, so you don't have to scroll through all the channels you don't watch. Locate something on the schedule you want to record. Press the record button and it will ask you if you want to record this show just once, every time it is on, or just new episodes. Take your pick, select "create timer", and you're done. You never have to worry about whether your show will be recorded or not. No setting of start and stop times, whether it's a daily show or a weekly show, etc. No limit to the number of shows you can have set up to record (remember the limit of 2,4,6, or 8 events on the vcr?). Never worrying about whether you rewound the tape, or even if you have a tape in the vcr -- just don't go over the 100 hour limit.

Finally -- With Dish (and I think the same is true with Direct), you can watch 1 show on 1 tv while another show is recording on the DVR. Or you can record 2 shows at the same time on the DVR. You can watch either of the 2 shows you are recording while you are recording them, or you can watch a previously recorded show at the same time 2 new shows are being recorded -- try that with a vcr! The only thing you can't do is record 2 shows at the same time and watch a third live show.

I like my Dish, and the customer service -- during a couple of early setup issues -- was superb.

If you only have one or two TVs, then it's pretty similar. But most satellite systems charge you a fee for every TV that you want to use. Cable you can just plug in as many TVs as you want.. but only the one with the box gets the Digital channels...

Of course I'm looking into getting a Cable Modulator so I can stick my box in the basement and have it broadcast itself on a single channel that I can then tune all my TVs to and vie wit from any room... But it'd all be the same channel.

For using with a HTPC, cable is better.

Comcast is the devil though.

I like cable. Mainly because you don't need a tuner in every room and they have local channels. I only watch NBC and Fox anyway. Wouldn't want to have to watch them over the air.

That's pretty much why I want it... to get my local channels in clear. In my area I can't get good signal on an air antenna.

Cable is just too expensive for me to justify getting it just for the locals and occasional other channels.

Most major cities get locals via Satellite. Only the boonies don't get locals but you can usually work it out with your Satellite provider to get east coast (NY) or west coast (LA) locals.

If you're going to get satellite, make sure it's not using telco return (56kbps) or you'll have a kickass download and a DIALUP upload!

I use DirecTV.

When I first moved into my house I called Charter to find out they didn't offer cable to my sibdivision, even though I'm in their "exclusive" area. When I asked when they planned to bring cable out I was told they had no plans to bring cable to my subdivision. The reps attitude was really sarcastic too, like "fvck off and die, loser!". I was super pissed.

So, I called DirecTV. I chose DirecTV because they use Tivo with their DVR's and I used to use Tivo when I had Knology cable.

Been extremely happy with DirecTV and DSL. If Charter came out now I'd be the one telling them to fvck off and die! No more cable for me!

If the locals are all that you really want, you should be able to get limited Basic service which should be around $12 a month...comcast in my area has this as an option...

careful about the satellite. Any damages on the satellite system is expensive to fix. Also if you ever decide to remove satellite it will cost $150.
