I am trying to decide whether to get either Cable or DSL The two companies available to me are Bright House (Cable) or Bell South (DSL). Which would you suggest or any insite to whether one is better than the other.
I have cable broadband in Hong Kong. For whatever reason, bootup takes forever as it takes a least one minute for the connection between the lan card and the cable modem to be established.
I also have radsl broadband in London. Bootup is much quicker. Establishing the connection from usb port to usb adsl modem is almost instantaneous.
Cable is downloads are much faster.
Wireless routers for cable broadband are easy to purchase in HK. My RADSL service provider does not support wireless networking. I believe that wireless routers for ADSL is available though.
I have continual complaints from friends that they cannot e-mail me at my radsl e-mail address. Have never had a problem with my cable e-mail address. When I check my radsl e-mail account from HK, my e-mail program almost always times out on the first send/receive.

If it's good reliable two way cable at decent speeds and it is either the same price or lower than DSL I would go with the cable. DSL was supposed to be the superior Broadband but not the way the U.S. Telcos are doing it both by lackluster performance, stingy on features like not allowing any kind of Servers and high priced.
Glad you formed an opinion, but IMHO, cable is the Jaguar of broadband. It may be fast, but it seems about as reliable as a Windows 95 PC. My personal experience is that it is fast, but it isn't a connection you can rely on to always be fast, or up. DSL on the other hand, as long as you have a good provider, seems a lot more reliable. It may not be as fast, but it's more stable and less prone to problems. Just MHO in my area and from what I have heard from others, so your mileage may vary.
cable reliability is purely subjective. I has some serious issues with my small provider, until they replaced the CMTS at the office. Since then, I have had one outage of 10 minutes in 6 months.
I have been on Bellsouth DSL for a couple of years now. No issues except for email, but that has settled down the past few months. Connections/download speed has been rock solid. I was on cable with Charter crapline and it was the worst expierance you could imagine, Charter is notorious in the southeast for obnoxiously overselling backbone connections.
i haven't really had any outages to speak of with optimum online......right now the only problem is an email outage thats going on (this is the only problem i can think of in the past 6-10 months). but that can happen to the phone company too.....
if cable is cheap in your area, i say take cable......for the price/speed performance, dsl has a long way to catch up...
I can get a digital package from my cable company (Bright House) for about $98 and get DSL for $45 amonth. My current cable bill is $60 so Cable would be a little cheaper. BellSouth DSL has a special where if I sign up for a year the first three months would be $19.99/month. What to do, what to do.
