You cannot touch the speed, reliability and blazing performance of cable.

When it works.

You guys must have some crappy cable companies. Using roadrunner for almost 6 years in 4 different locations and maybe went out 2 or 3 times.

Overall I've had better experience with cable. I had DSL for about 3 years.. It went out at least once every day for about 15 minutes.

I've had cable now for only about 3 months but it has been problem free. And It's tons faster. (I think people in my neighborhood are too stupid to use the internets.. so no problems with slowdowns)

One thing I did notice though is the 'reaction time' is slower on this cable. (probably has a legitimate name that I don't know) Click on a link... it takes a hair of a second longer for the page to kick in than it did on DSL. (my DSL router was way more expensive than my cable modem though.. may have more to do with that) But download speeds are way faster anyways.

I tried Verizon for 6 months and the service went down every 10 minutes. They eventually disconnected me and let me keep the modem as a parting gift. Total cost to me, $0.

it depends on your distance to the CO w/ dsl versus the amount of people sharing the same pipe as you with cable.

It's all shared man. It's all tubes. Both DSL and cable are shared. It just depends on how it is architected.

But as a technology cable offers better performance and more bang for the buck for existing networks.

not this crap again....

as spidey said, cable give you a fatter pipe to the house for the price due to their infrastructure....the quality of that pipe and such is completely dependant on the competancy of the ISP staff and the quality of their equipment.

In all areas, cable or DSL is going to depend on what is offered. Everyone will have different experiences. I had 6mb/796k Comcast cbale before this and never had a problem. My DSL has gone down a couple times for fiber cuts or a fire at a switching building.

Remember that DSL is your own connection to the internet and cable is a shared node with your neighbors. Hope your neighbors are bandwidth hogs if you're on cable.

In my town, we can have 3mb/256k Charter cable or UP TO 5-7 mb/1000k DSL depending on how close you are to the central office.

Cable is $50 a month plus $3 for a modem without any administration abilities and DSL for that speed there is $57.95 plus $5 for a non wireless modem and $8 for a wireless modem. The DSL modem allows for all kinds of admin stuff. Port forwarding, WEP stuff.

Cable hits about 370 kB/s down and my 1.5mb DSL hits 160 kB/s. The upload speed is why we have both. I get 95 kB/s on my DSL and cable only hits 28 kB/s.

We got a special deal on cable and it's $32 a month for a year and my DSL is $44.95.

I've got SBC DSL and prefer it over our cable choice for a number of reasons, primary among them being price and never have been baselessly taken to court by SBC. The flame of hatred that burns within me for our local cable company is almost as bright as the one I have for Best Buy.

Vitriol aside, I've got 6Mbit ADSL for $29.99 right now... cable's $52 (+ another $10 if you don't have CATV with them, which I don't) for 6Mbit. I get 620 K/sec from Easynews, and that's the time I come close to saturating my pipe.

cable flat out... 10mbit here on Roadrunner.. vs 3.0 on the fastest DSL.. AND to have DSL down here you gotta carry a phone line as well.. so approx 80 bucks a month is my DSL/phone bill.
alltell sucks..
and they are the only ones that service my area. wish my apartment had time warner..

I've got DSL now, an online bandwidth meter shows I have 1.2 megabit connection. But in terms of actual download speeds, I max out at 200kpbs. However, I just got the upgrade to Fios and am getting ready to enjoy my 5meg down/2meg up connection. I'll let you guys know how it compares.

I had DSL for 4 years and Cable for the past 2 years. Cable is simply a lot faster. I'm not a big fan of Comcast for tech support or any of their business practices, but the service is simply better.

For ADSL, it was decent speed and pretty reliable, with roughly 1-2 outages per year...same for Comcast.

It really depends on the area. Some Cable providers are good, while others have insanely low bandwidth caps and turn your download records over to the **AA if you download anything with a suspicious looking file name. Do your research.
