Cable or Chain?

I went to buy an extra lock for my bike due to the Kryptonite malfunction/flaw or rumor. I had two options, a really thick chain, or semi thick cable.

Of my two options, I bought the cable as reccomended by one of the employees. Did I make the right choice? It was less expensive than the chain, but he said it the cable is tougher to cut then the chain.

I intend to use this with my u-lock, so I should be fine, but I was curious about what you guys thought.

Unless it's some sort of supercable, it seems that it would be much easier to cut than a chain.

You get enough leverage, and you'll go through a cable like butter. Same thing with a chain, really.

A chain will take slightly longer to cut since you have to cut through both sides of a link.

With a bolt cutter, a cable is usually harder to cut because the cable will flatten out instead of being cut. A chain is much easier to cut with a bolt cutter. It is however very easy to cut a cable with a large cable cutter (like for large electrical cables).

I work in the hardware department at a home improvement store. There is heavy duty hardened steel that is nearly impossible to cut with bolt cutters. Other than that I hate cutting the cables because like another person said it flattens out and is hard to cut. There is only a couple of cutters that can cut them in the store.

The only problem is a hacksaw cuts them like butter...

It's a moot point. If someone wants to cut it, they're going to have a tool big enough for the job (or a hacksaw). The only difference is how much they grunt while doing it.

Cable is messier for vandals to deal with. But as Dr. Pizza said, all you can do is discourage them and slow them down- if they want youre bike, they'll have it.

Melt your bike down and fuse it to a pole with a massive electrical current whenever you leave it, when you come back, pass the current through the bike in the other direction to get your bike back to normal. ;)

I use a BIG FREAKING CABLE lock.

Or I did until we tried to open one just like it with a pen at work today.

It's NOT a rumor, you really CAN open those round key type locks with a pen. :(

We pulled ALL our locks that use that type of key off the selves today.

Is that just a Kryptonite or all of them?

Get a pipe one,

edit: I know that wasn't one of the choices, but I thought that would be the best one if you didn't know.

well since a chain cutter is made to cut chains.. i would say the cable wins.. but i think if they really wanted your bike, it'll be gone
