cable modems?

My cable modem has been working intermittantly as of late. I think it's time to get a new one.

Question 1: Do I have to buy a specific modem through Cox Communications, or can I use whatever?

Question 2: If I can use whatever, what's a good black modem? My ugly biege modem is mucking up my l33tness 😉

Just because your connection is being dropped doesn't neccessarilly mean your cable modem is going bad. It could be a plethora of reasons. The usual cause is due to a bad cable line. Are you splitting the cable line that goes into your cable modem? How old is the cable line? Call Cox to have someone come out and take a look at it.

I have Cox HSI myself and it usually depends on what they support..........although, I just bought me a new modem about 6 months ago and I went with a Toshiba 2200.............I like it a lot since before I had a Toshiba 1100 and it lasted me a long long time without a problem............but I think just to be safe I would call Cox and have someone come out and check out the lines and make sure it is not something wrong with something outside the house or cables inside the house first. You would really be upset if you bought a new modem and had the same problem huh?

good luck,

I replaced my cable modem maybe 6 months ago, and I got this one. Toshiba PCX2600. I've liked it. Works well, keeps everything running very smooth.

But I would suggest having them test out the line first, unless you don't mind being disappointed if the new modem doesn't fix things.

I have cox and I use the MOTOROLA Surfboard DOCSIS 2.0 Cable Modem, Model SB5100, I would call them up and ask them if the MOTOROLA Surfboard DOCSIS 2.0 Cable Modem, Model SB5100, works properly in your area.

Motorola 5100's and 4220 series modems are great, my isp uses them exclusively now. My favorite cable modem of all time though? The now discontinued 3Com 3CR29223(sharkfin), it's a beast!

got a Surfboard SB5100 myself and it works great good modem to get and from what I heard when doing research on it before buying that it works well even on crappier signals.

DOCSIS 2.0 with VOIP is the way to go, then paint it back or put it behind your desk. My Cable Modem and Router are in the wiring closet plugged into a UPS.

I have an SB3100, had it for about four years. No changes in location or anything, it just sits there, undisturbed. I live in a condo, btw, so I don't think there would be a cable-stealing issue, but who knows...

Edit: haha, it just went out as I clicked "reply"

Cox usually gives you a free cable modem for signing up. However you may check the supported cable modem list for your area here:
