Cable modems Which one would you pick?

etech

IAfter a month of trying to maintain a stable connection with DSL a tech finally told me that my loop length is 19500'. So it's time to switch to cable. It's capped at 320kbs but that is still faster then what I could get with DSL. With our cable company you have to buy your own modem.

Which of the following would you buy and any suggestions on where to get them for less then $200.

3Com Home Connect Cable Modem External (3CR29220)
3Com Office Connect Cable Modem External (3CR29210)
3Com Home Connect Cable Modem External with USB (3CR29223)
Best Data Smart One (CMX110)
Motorola "General Instruments" SURFboard (SB3100)
Toshiba PCX1100

Thanks

i have the toshiba, time warner provided it, but i have no basis for comparison, it works, i love it, it got me die hard 3 which i wanna watch tonight, cool flick.

RoadRunner provided me with the SurfBoard modem and it works great. I think a cool thing about it is that it has both USB and ethernet (RJ45) connections on it. The USB connect is slower, but I think it's a cool option to have. Nice modem too.

Well, I've heard good things about 3Com modems. If you can wait a bit, I've found that cable companies will offer a rebate (up to $50) for a modem you have to purchase. Seems like they have a deal every few months or so. This appears to be more common in areas that offer more than one way to get broadband (and, if you're tossing DSL, I guess you are).

Cipher, I'm not sure I can wait, broadband has spoiled me. 🙂

From the responses I think I should of reworded my post to.

Are there any of the modems that I should stay away from? My only requirement is a ethernet port so my ICS connection will work. I've heard of difficulty hooking up ICS with USB.

Thanks

Use whichever is compatible with your cable system, call and see if they have a list of compatibles. They are all good quality especially 3Com, Toshiba and Motorola. Your choice will likely have little if any effect on your connection speed.

That is the list of modems that the cable company supplies. They do not supply the modem, but you must buy one from the list. They have a list of "authorized dealers" in town, but you do not have to buy it from them.

I was just wondering if there were any known problems with any of them or if one had any good features that the others don't.
Also does anyone has a suggestion on where to pick one up for a good price.

i have the toshiba pcx1000,love it.(my friend has a zeinth ? never heard any problems from his either)

I have a USR/3Com CMX that I'm renting from the cable company. With so many good ones out there I guess it's a question of price. I just saw mine at a computer show (retail boxed) for $109.00. I probably should have gone for it but the cable company wants you to leave the modem powered all the time and for 7 bucks a month.......I dunno.
