Cable Modems - Is there a difference between new and old?

I am currently running my cable connection through an old cable modem. Its a Toshiba, and its almost exactly 3 years old. Through the years, this thing has been rock solid despite looking and feeling like a rather shabbily built cable modem (my friend got the same one 3 years ago and his died in a month.)

I'm wondering if I'll get any kind of performance boost from upgrading to a new modem like a Motorola Surfboard.

I'm still having a problem with my router randomly rebooting and kicking me offline, but I can't figure out if that's related to my cable modem.

Unless the Modem is Broken Cable/DSL Modem is not a Speed factor determinates

Since the Technology is the same some Newer Modems are made ?Shabbier? than the previous ones in order to sell more units for less money.
