Cable modems and cable services

Hey i need to get rid of my dial up connection and i need to know stuff about cable modems.

First does anyone use charter@home i think that is the only cable service in the area? How are they? Good fast access, good customer relations?

Also they charge $15 a month to lease or $250 to buy the cable modem! I am sure I can find cheaper. Can i use any cable modem? What is a good (fairly cheap please) to buy?

Thanks for the help

Well i'm mad now. I gave them a call and found out that they are not accepting any new customers. I got mail from them today advertising it and asking me to join then when i call they say they are not accepting any new people! I Asked them why they were advertising for a service that they do not provide! The lady was like we sent those out two days ago and yesterday they decided to not accept any new people! Wow what a bunch of idiots! That is one of the best marketing plans I have ever seen!

That's not good! I've heard that most @home services are terrible... but have no personal experience with them... By terrible I have heard they are down a lot, they have slow connections, etc..

Good luck finding an ISP

I believe @home filed for bankruptcy last week. It is likely that they will be purchased and service will be back up soon, but noone knows when.

I have it and have reasonably good service when it is working correctly, but have had lots of down time. I'm in the middle of Los Angeles though. I know a lot of other people that have it in less populated areas and have had very good results.
