Both ways of connecting are fast enough for the cable modem. If you use the USB connection, then you will need drivers for the modem.
If you are using linux or older windows os, then you most likely will have to use ethernet connection.
When I had my cable modem connected to USB, my USB mouse woud not work correctly when i was downloading with high data rates
(2mbit/s). Thats the only reason why I use ethernet connection.
The Big disadvantage of USB cable modems is that you can't use a hardware router to share internet access with them. It needs to be ethernet for that. Thats why I won't use a USB cable modem.
The USB connection allows the cable companys' to connect new users, and provide access to bi, for those who do not have LAN (NIC cards) in their pc's.
LAN is still the preferred connection.

LAN would be faster, since USB uses shared bandwith for all devices on the bus. Also, some USB controllers eat up CPU cycles, slowing your computer down.
