Does it really matter which cable modem you get? Does speed have that much of an affect on which brand you use? Since I just got roadrunner. It's quite expensive.

Yes cable modems can effect transfer rates. When I got RR, I was given a brand new toshiba modem not sure of model. At work now! Check out Text or Text

Well, in a nutshell, yes it does matter which modem you get. Some ISPs support only a selection of modems, others support a more variety. Check with your local ISP to see what brands/models they support.

I have used and experienced 4 different kinds of cable modems and their speeds were not affected by any particular brand. I've dealt with Motorola, Toshiba, Linksys, and RCA modems and all seem to be quite on-par with features and speeds.

When you are setting up your system for a cable modem, I HIGHLY suggest you use ethernet to connect the modem to your computer, rather than USB. Not all modems support USB hookups, but that's no big deal.

When using USB with my particular ISP and the Linksys as well as the Motorola modems, I was able to reach a peak of only 750Kbps. This is still quite fast, but when I used ethernet, I was able to fully utilize my "whopping" :p 800Kbps connection.

I hope I've answered your questions and have given you a few pointers to look out for. Enjoy and happy surfing!

Yes, it's usually best to stick with the brands/models that your cable company recommends for optimal performance.

Cox Communications in my area issues (and officially supports) Toshiba modems, which can be purchased for ~$130 at most retail stores now.

A lot of providers support docsis 1.0 or 1.1 standards. If they do, tehn you can use any cable modem that is docsis compliant.

Forgot to put the rest of my post in.. ehhe.

Speeds might have been affected by going from an older modem to a newer one, but any recent cable modem should work about the same. I went from a docsis compliant motorola to the toshiba I bought and haven't noticed any differences in speed. (Other than the incompetence of Cox cable in trying to put my modem's MAC address into their system 5 times without getting it right)

I use a Toshiba PCX2200 with RR and I continually get 2800 tp 3200 kbps down and 350 to 360 kbps up.
