Oh yes, cable modem is definitely worth it. When I got my cable modem, it was like having a brand new computer. It is a completely different experience using the Net with a cable modem. When downloading, you can expect speeds at around 150kb/s. If you go to big sites with fast connections, you can even go up to 200 or even 300 kb/s. It is a big big difference with dial-up.

I just got cable and I love it.
I see that you guys that already have cable are getting better speeds than I am.
The fastest i've gotten is 82 kb/s.
Is this because i'm in a apartment building or what?

PC_Freak: it really depends on what server you are downloading from. My friend only downloaded a file from Microsoft and got 400kb/s. I also find the speed for cable needs to build up over time. So the longer you d/l the faster it gets. I usually use some download manager like Getright, and d/l say 20 files all at once. That way I get over 100kb/s most of the time.

I notice it does count up on the download speed, untill i get to about 15 meg, then it tops off.
I'm going to try your tips now.
Thanks.

Pcfreak, like you the best I can do is about 80-90k/sec. But that's because tons of people in my area have them. But it still beats the crap out of 56k.

PC_Freak,

Go to http://www.speedguide.net and take a look at their cable / DSL tweaks. It should raise you from 50% to 200% faster than what you are currently running, just by using those tweaks.. A great site for cable modem questions and answers.

Good Luck
