I just got timewarner cable internet today.

The guy that came to install it could NOT get it to work from the modem->computer through a cat5, but it does work through USB. The only downside is that USB cuts the speed of the connection down.

ALSO, I have tried getting it to work with my router, but i still can't do that for some reason. I can't even see my router on the network to configure anything.

Have you tried another cable? have you tried straight-through / crossover? Did you disconnect the USB while you tried the Ethernet?

Try Ethernet only, and power-cycle the cable modem.

Which cable modem is it?

How does USB cause a slowdown? USB is 11Mb/sec (1.0). Granted, CAT5 can easily be 100Mb/sec, but when most cable connections never go anywhere over 3-5Mb/sec, that shouldn't cause any slowdowns (except for on the PC itself.)

The Ethernet connection should be almost automatic. Try the following with only the Ethernet with a straight patch cable connected:

Set the Ethernet on the system to automatically obtain IP and DNS addresses. Leave the other stuff at the defaults. Turn off the PC. Power cycle the cable modem, leaving it off for at least 30 seconds. When the modem gets connected with a solid connect light, turn on the PC.

Try to open IE and see if you're connected.

If not, open a command prompt and type: IPCONFIG /ALL

Post the results.

Try UNPLUGGING the cable modem.
Simply using the off/on switch won't suffice, when switching between USB and ethernet cable.

I've never seen a cable modem with an on/off switch. :) Of the half-dozen different types I've seen, your only option is to pull out the power cable...

usually you just have to leave it discinnected for 5-10 seconds, sometimes have to reset the router too. (hold down the pin button until it starts blinking rapidly, on a linksys router)

make sure you have straight cable (aka patch).

reboot the PC...

I changed my modem connection from USB to Ethernet a week or so ago.

It too wouldn't connect with the Ethernet until I called the ISP company and the support person said something along the lines of "I'll have to put in your NIC MAC address and you can try again after 10 minutes". Well 10 minutes later it was working. The only thing she said is to have the IP optained automatically - but that's how it was in the first place.

Granded it might be that I didn't understand what she was trying to explain to me, but what I'm trying to say is that I had to call the company for my modem to work through UTP.
