Cable Modem won't connect?

I have been using Adelphia cable for my Internet for years and everything works fine and no extra software or anything is needed. I just plug the ethernet in and it works for my computer.

The problem is I am trying to now get my sister's new laptop on the Internet to update some stuff and it is not working. I just unplug the ethernet from my computer and put it into her laptop and no matter what it won't get an IP/establish a connection. This is on a fresh WinXP Pro SP2 install for the laptop and I tried various things like unplugging the cable modem's power for a few minutes etc. No firewall is enabled either and TCP/IP is installed (which is all I use for my computer).

I've had like 3 computers I've built over the years and they all worked fine on this connection so I don't get what the problem is with this laptop.

Your modem probably has only one IP address available and is reserving it for your own computer's NIC, which it can identify by the NIC's unique MAC address. Unplugging the modem's power, plugging the laptop into it, and then plugging in the modem's wall power again may get you around that.

May I suggest you think twice about running an unfirewalled computer on a broadband connection, by the way. Get a cable/DSL router, and you will not only have some firewall protection, but also the ability to run any computer off your connection without the NIC/MAC fuss :)

I use a highly configured settings file I made for Kerio Personal Firewall 2.1.5, which is installed on the laptop. I simply have it disabled at the momemt as I am trying to troubleshoot the cable modem problem. I already tried unplugging the cable modem, but I might leave it unplugged overnight or something and try again in the morning.

Did you have the laptop release and renew its IP after unplugging and replugging the modem?

yeah. i found the problem, but not a fix. :(

the problem is that the DHCP Client service is not starting up even though it's set to automatic. there is something wrong with one of it's dependencies. none of the dependencies are other services though. there are 3 things listed with a "little computer" next to each as opposed to the usual "yellow cog" for a service. so i do not where i am supposed to access these 3 settings to enable them or whatever.

the listed dependencies are:
AFD (why is this necessary?)
NetBios over TCP (why is this necessary?)
TCP/IP Protocol Driver (this is installed!)

on my computer it only lists the last one in the DCHP Client dependencies, so I don't know why it even wants the other 2. this laptop is crazy. that's what happens when they use weird custom hardware which require their weird custom drivers which now force crazy settings upon me that i'd never normally want or use.

update: just fixed the dhcp startup problem. the netbios over tcp device in device manager was disabled so i set it to startup up again. i assume this will fix the laptop connection problem but i am sick of messing with it tonight. :)
