cable modem woes

Hello. I went through quite a few pages of reading but couldn't find anything.

Well I've installed everything from Comcast just like I've done before with DSL and Optimum Online.

I have a fresh install of XP Home and I installed everything. Had a few issues with the cable modem not getting registered so I spent a few hours on the phone with CC. After getting it to work I hung up and went to do other things. When I came back 'net wasn't working and my network icon said "Limited or no connectivity." Tried to "Repair" but won't go through. On a side note, during one of my calls I told the CC person that our TVs were getting poor reception so they'll be sending a tech to get all that fixed. Faulty wiring?

So finally to the issue. The modem works for like 15 mins and then cuts me off. BUT... if I unplug the power cord out and plug it back in immediately even (pc is on btw), it'll do it's thing and work again for a while and cut off again.

It can't be the wiring right?? Any ideas?

Thanks!

Limited no connectivity means you have an auto config ip from windows 169.254.x.y.

Are you running any software firewalls? How old is your cable modem? Does it have a USB net interface? Do you get a DHCP time out when you try and renew your ip? Have you tried the same modem on a different pc if possible?

Edit: Reason why I ask if you have a software firewall is. I used to work with some modems that sent a ping respose to the device hooked up to it. If it didn't receive a reply, it would release the connection to keep that dynamic ip free.

I tried running norton but for some reason it wouldn't start after reboot. I took it off (and didn't install anything) until this issue is resolved. Right now just the windows firewall is running. The modem is new. Yes, USB interface is there. When I tried to renew, it wasn't a timeout. I forgot what it was.

And no I haven't tried in another pc.

Help is much appreciated.

Try the USB interface versus the ethernet. If you feel confident in disabling the SP2 firewall go ahead and do so for troubleshooting purposes. My other guess is your modem is hosed and needs to be replaced. You wouldn't happen to have a router to test with?

If it works for 15min. and cuts out your computer is probably configured OK.

I would hold ComC responsible to make it work. If your TV is getting bad service your Cable system is probably faulty, and it might affect the Internet signal as well.

Wait for them to fix it and take it from there.

What brand modem is it. I once had an RCA modem that always disconected after any serious browsing. I also tried a lot of Linksys modems and they all crashed with serious activity.
The only ones that worked fine were Motorola. If you can try changing your modem, and maybe try buying another modem just to try it and return it right afterwards.

The modem is a Motorola. I'll wait for tomorrow when they come take a look at the wiring. I'll come back and ask if this keeps happening. Thanks again and I'll give it a shot via USB.
