well, its that time for me to move again and with the new apartment comes a need for anotherhigh speed access connection. the questions i have now is whether to get dsl or cable modem. i will be living in souther california, more specically santa monica. if anyone has information on this area's intnernet service providers and how good they are, that would be much appreciated. of if you could point me to a site that would give me some information about isp's in the area in terms of uptime and speed.

thanks in advance!

How good cable is (and probably dsl as well) is how new the node is. I am on a brand new node that was put in just a few months ago. My tested download speed is over 3000Kbps. I never see the impact of any other user on my connection and my router has never observed a single collision on the WAN port. My latency to game servers is often under 100ms. This solution rocks!

The only downside is that the upload is capped at 128k (still ISDN speed). This isn't too big of a deal but a bigger upload would allow me to do more mp3 filesharing (right now I cap the bastards at 64K).

So investigate who has the newer system, I have heard horror stories of people on older nodes with crappy network congestion, bad routers that drop traffic, etc.

I haven't had a problem with my cable (Charter Pipeline) although I did when it was new to my area. For $24/month you can't beat it.

RISman where do you live? Here in central cali it's almost $50 a month including modem rental, that's a month to month lease, if you sign up for a 12 month lease it's $40, still outragous.

I love my AT&T RR cable, consistent 170-220KB/sec down, 35-37KB/sec up, and averaging 30ms pings 24/7 :)
