"Cable Modem to Switch to Computer" how will this effect gaming?

If i were to put in a switch to network and share my cable modem how will I play online games. Example: I want to host a Q3 server for 4 of my friends, what do I tell them my IP address is? How will they be able to connect to my server.

Sorry if this a silly question. 🙁

If you want to share Cable Connection, you need a Cable/DSL Router that includes Switch. Switch alone does not share any Internet Connection.

You can read here a Primer on the Issue here:

Hub, Switch, Router, DHCP, LAN, WAN, NAT, etc. - Basic Primer.

All the Routers include Firewalls that can not be disabled. However most Firewalls includes means to open the ports that are necessary for gaming.

You can see here list if the ports and how it is done, here:

To choose a Router read the reviews and see which one fit your purpose (there is no BEST).

Log the following site, scroll down and look to the right, you will see reviews of most available Routers.
