Hi

I can't seem to get my wireless connection going between cable modem and wireless access point. Here's the specs:-

Connected via RJ-45 / Crossed over UTP
Cable Modem - Motorola SurfBoard SB 4100i
Wireless AP - Avaya Residential Gateway I, RG-I (UK)

Connected via USB
Desktop PC, running Win XP
Wireless USB Network Adapter - LinkSys WUSB11 ver 2.5

Connected via PC Card Slot
Laptop, running Win 98SE
Lucent Orinoco Silver Wireless PC Card

On desktop, LinkSys Utility detects the correct network name, but no Internet connection possible
On laptop, wireless utility also detects the correct network name, but no Internet connection, again.

I suspect, the modem may not be communicating with the Avaya RG1 box, but how do I get it to work?

Thanks.

I just want to add: I can't seem to find a way to configure the Cable Modem, SB4100. Thats because it's connected to the Avaya RG1 via UTP cable. Also, when I use the RG Utility on the desktop to wireless connect to the RG1 box, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

I' stumped.

A couple things to ask....

Does your cable company allow you to have more than one IP at a time?
Meaning can you have more than one PC on your SB4100 at a time?

Here in my neck of the woods...(Maine) you are only allowed ONE system on at a time, the cable modem "learns" the MAC address of a connected device and only allows it to get out to the DHCP server on my providers end. Thus if i unplug my desktop and plugin my laptop with a different MAC, it wont allow it to get an IP unless I reset the modem by unplugging it for a minute then turning it back on. This clears the MAC address it has and allows me to get on with the new system.

Your Access point has a MAC address, it is probably garnering your single IP you are allowed, when your client cards try to connect, they successfully attach tot the Access Point, but when they attempt to pass through and get an IP from the cable modem, it sees them as "unallowed" devices and wont give them an ip.

on a side note, I have an Enterasys Roamabout R2 (same exact ap as the avaya units just different brand name) hooked up to my SB3100 cable modem.
I have to use a router to get my clients out to the net...

Hi SaigonK

Thanks for the insight! My suspicions exactly.

1. When I called up my ISP, they simply said thay they do not provide support for connection sharing config issues; and did not explicitly say that it was not allowed. They even went on to say that users who employed routers & hubs had to debug on their own... so, my guess is that with this Cable Modem set up.. there is a workaround.. I just haven't figured out how.

2. You mentioned using a router.. how and where do I fit this into the set up I mentioned? Also, I am slightly confused, with Avaya RG1, isn't the Access Point already doing the routing ? Sorry, I'm not so familiar with Network issues, so need some clarification.

More importantly, having invested in wireless boxes that's at a premium compared to other competitor makes, I just wanna get the darn thing up and running.

Any help is appreciated.
