Cable modem: tied to modem or location?

I'm moving a block away to a cable ready apartment and wonder if I can just hook up my cable modem in my new place. I'm still paying the bill but I'm not scheduled for an official install date for a few weeks. Can I just hook up my modem and will it work there?

Thanks!

Depends on when they turn on the line.

my line had to have a filter installed on the street, but i just used the cable modem from my old house with no problems after they did that

It might, it might not. It's usually tied to your MAC address. When I moved, the house I moved into had a cable modem and they removed theirs and I plugged in mine and it worked fine because we had the same provider and mine was already "registered" with their system.

Your cable modem will work anywhere that you can attach it to an acceptable signal. If the cable is connected at your new place, and there are no traps installed, then it will work. The cable company will want to know that you are moving, though. They will probably want to send a tech out to transfer your service.

I'd be less worried about the technical issues and more worried about them trying to bill you for the equipment...

I'm guessing you have TWC. When I moved, the guy who lived in my new place before transferred his cable service into my name and I kept his equipment. I brought my old equipment back to the TWC customer "service" center. You may want to look into doing that if possible.

Since the equipment is registered by serial number, if you cancel your service at your current location, they're going to want the equipment back. You can try calling and asking them if you can take your equipment with you, but I wouldn't put too much faith in getting straight answers from the trained monkeys they have answering their phones.

i had to have it installed at the new place. same equipment though. i tried to see if it would work, but it didn't. good thing too, the guy ran the cable properly instead of the hack job the previous tenant did.

It'll work so long as your MAC doesnt change and your still on the same terminating equipment loop. I did it lately in my area, a mile down the road. Works fine 🙂

Only problem is that if you dont have a return signal at the location, then you clearly cant connect.
