Cable Modem--> switch--> PC1, PC2, PC3

Hi,

My friend wanted to see if he didn't have to open the router he just bought to share an ATT broadband connection, so he hooked the switch up to the modem and the PCs in his house to the switch, and voila, instant connection without having to do anything, not even networking the computers together. Is this common knowledge (meaning I'm ignorant) or is there something strange going on here? ATT uses a network that is not based on IP addresses, right? So is this why he was able to just plug and then chug away?

All of the Internet uses IP addresses.

Your friend is probably using 3 of AT&Ts IP addresses, they may or may not notice but if they do they'll start charging for them or cut off his service.

Ohhh ic, thanks. I just thought that because ATT no longer identifies one computer at a location and uses that as a membership, that it didn't care about IP's anymore. But that's true, IP's have to be assigned, huh? Thanks for the suggestion
