Cable Modem speeds very random???

Ok, so I just switched from 3MB to 5MB connection, and my download speeds kind of sucked. (100KB/s) mas.

Cable company suggested I conduct a "Fake" power outage by unplugging the modem, wait a minute, and plug it back in.

I'm now downloading at 550 KB/s

I mean... how does that even happen??

I'm a networking noob =)

You followed the normal and best troublshooting method.

1) unplug cable modem
2) wait at least 60 seconds
3) plug in cable modem

What this does is reset all the various timers and mechanisms and allows every state machine to restart. People laugh at this because they are used to PC troubleshooting. But it is a very valid means to resolve networking. In fact it solves 9/10 broadband problems.
