I just got a cable modem but I dont seem to be getting the speed I thought I would. My downloads seem to peek out at about 30k/s. Is there something I could check myself or should I get on the phone and give Charter a call.

Go here and test your speed...

I find that speed builds up slowly for cable modem... Try downloading a large file, you should see the speed build-up slowly... And also download multiple files at the same time for a faster total d/l speed...

Remember your download speed depends on where you download the file also... so do some more testing before deciding if it's your line's problem...

Go to the following site to test your @Home speed: 24.0.0.71/download or possibly 24.0.0.69/download. From there look in the @home software section and download the main file, it's 8-14mb depending on the version and is a good test of speed. This is also the only site from which @Home will give a darn about your speed. It's on @Home servers and is the only guaranteed speed. If you get less that about 75kb/sec give tech support a call and be ready for the craziest hoop-jumping you've ever been through. There are no shortcuts on speed issues unfortunately, just deal with it. Hope this helps. If you have any other questions feel free to post them, or email me directly:

ps: I was a tier 2 tech for @Home for a year until this last month when they finally ticked me off too bad and I left, so I know the procedures pretty well
