Cable Modem Speed

The past couple months in my area I've noticed my internet speeds are a little slow. I'm supposed to have a 6Mb connection but my average bandwidth test usually comes out to around 1Mb.

My bandwidth speeds on these tests used to average more like 4mb. Anyway, I called the cable company and tehy ran a signal strength test and told me that they were recieving a weak signal from my modem and would send someone out.

WOW Comes out, my brother is home and I am at work... My brother isnt well versed in computers or networking... The guy apparently is out there for less tahn 5 minutes I am told. He tell my brother that we are having thise problem because of our router! This of course upsets me because I have had this router for years with no problems and have had great speeds in teh past with this company while using this router! They did apparently look at the modem and run some speed tests and said it was OK... I wish I was there at the time.

I was of course not satisfied with what they told my brother, so again I called WOW... They run their test from their end again and tell me that they are showing signal power of 32.8 from my modem and I should be getting 40-60...

"Hmmm, you have a weak signal, you must be loosing a lot of packets and be experiencing slow speeds at times...." This is what they told me over the phone... I was like no kidding!
There are times I've run tests and have gotten as low as 150Kbs speeds... There was one time I had 3100Mb on the tests...Much more acceptable...

Oh, forgot to mention I humored them on the phone and plugged my computer directly into the modem with no change in speed. I have noticed that while playing some online games that there are times when the speed is OK but there are times where I lag so bad it seems like I'm on dial up! Usually download speeds on files do not ever exceed 150kbs... At work we have cable internet and I am alsways seeing speeds 300kbs and higher. Same ISP and same plan.

Ok, so this issue has been going on for a little while, I know that at least up until March I was achieving excellent speeds. So what could the issue(s) be?

My thoughts from talking to the person over the phone is that the signal coming/leaving my house is weak. So I'm guessing it's either the modem, the coax line, the splitter or some kind of interferrance. Any other Ideas? They will be coming back out in a few days.

Cliffs:

- Internet speeds slower than they should be
- Problem blamed on my router
- Call to ISP tells me taht signal strength is 32.8 and should be 40-60
- Low signal strength results in loss of packets
- Cable company coming abck out in a few days
- Any suggestions of otehr issues? I suspect line, modem, splitter or interferrance

LOL good suggestion! I told the person on the phone from WOW that the guy who came out was probably intimidated by all the cables, switches and routers running around.... Funny thing is that there are only 3 computers and a network printer hooked up to the network right now and usually only 1-2 machines are actually on at any time. There used to be more like 8-9 machines connected to the netowrk with an average of 5-6 running at any time. Heck I even used to run a webserver and an MMORPG from my home and still seemd faster lol.

Ohhh yeah one more thing... Doesnt really apply to me because I have Windows XP Pro SP2 but.... On the WOW website is lists min requirements for the 6MB connection as having Windows 2000 or Xp... Why is that? I mean NICs with 10MB 10/100 have been around for a while....

I was only partially kidding; most ISPs have a policy not to deal with systems that include a Router (unless they supplied the Router). There is always the possibility that the trouble comes from the Router, you cannot expect the ISP (and rightfully so) to support and know how to deal with all the Router that are out there.

Some field tech. people are nice enough to suggest to the owner to disconnect the Router and connect one good computer of his choice to the Modem, and they would try to ?Fix? the problem.
Others are using the Router as an excuse to move on (especially if they are behind schedule or before lunch;) ).

Hehe I wasnt kidding about hiding teh router while they are out LOL :)
Like I had said somewhere in that long post... I connected my machine directly to the modem...

Even reset the modem and PC and cleared Temp files, cookies ect.... Bandwidth tests were coming just under 1mb! Did get one connected directly to the modem with over 2 mb but also got one connected to the router with over 3mb.
