Cable Modem speed slow after removing my router

I was using a linksys wrt54G with my road runner service. I had a loss of connection so I disconnected by router and reset my modem. Now everything is working but my download speed is only 400-500kb/s where it should be 3mb/s. I was wondering residual linksys driver may be a cause? I didn't see any specific uninstall under add/remove programs and neither is it in the startup menu. How can I remove the driver that was installed to see if it'll correct the slow internet connection? THanks.

connection speed is measured in Mbps (Megabits per second). If you have 3Mb DSL, your average download speed in KBps (KiloBYTES per second) will be 384.

If you were actually expecting 3MBps, you would need a 24Mbps internet connection...

I used Speedtest.net. It saves previous speed tests. One month ago, download was 4811kb/s and it shows my ranking is high compared to other people's tests. Now it is 480kb/s and it is crap :(

Have you tried putting the router back in the picture and see what happens? There could be 50 million things that could go into this and you've only said that you took out the router. I would suggest turning off all of your equipment, then powering things back on one at a time starting with your cable modem, then your router, then your PC(s) and see what happens. Post back after that.

There should be NO drivers involved in using the Linksys router assuming you're connected via ethernet so that can't be the problem. It could be a problem with speed auto negotiation between you PC's NIC and the cablemodem, try forcing it to 10/half duplex via the advanced driver tab and see if that helps. You're not connected via USB cable, are you?

Also - it could be that your cablemodem took a power hit via the incoming cable line or an electrical surge (you should have BOTH protected). Give your CATV provider a call and have them run diags on the modem to look for equipment damage or a line problem. It's possible some joker nicked your cable line with a shovel or there's a problem upstream in the cable tap to your house that could have occurred if they were doing another install in the area, etc...
