Cable Modem Security Problem

Okay, one of my friends grandma, and another one of my friends have cable modem service through Cox@Home. Both of them have had their files opened, created, and deleted. Another of my friends, Brian, and I are trying to figure out how they have done this. I know it has something to do with Microsoft Windows Networking and I have seen a file on the 'net on how to accomplish this, but I can't seem to find this. There are two reasons I want to know how to do this: One is to stop it from happening on Brian's grandma's computer and on my other friend's computer. The other is so I can share files with Brian without having to use AIM or ICQ.

Thanks in advance.

TCP/IP is a protocol designed to be used on the internet... so if your PC is connected directly to the cable modem using TCP/IP, and have file and printer sharing enabled, it's just your whole PC (including your harddrive) is part of the internet... Many from all over the world can access their files and do what they want to them...

You can do a couple of tweaks to prevent this. If you are not sharing your harddrive or printer over a network, just disable file and printer sharing... Installing a software firewall will also do the job...

If you must share files and printer, go to Shields Up to learn how to share them safely... Read over their Network Bondage section...

turn of windows file and print sharing.

idealy if you windows machine is connected directly to the cable modem (no firewall/router), remove every protocol except TCP/IP.

if you leave netbios on the computer, there are a few exploits and DOS to use against windows and i dont recommend it. besides, its only used to share files locally.
