Cable modem/Router advice

FINALLY getting away from shitty Windstream after 4 years. I'm moving closer into town and will have access to cable modem.

I'll be on a 50MB plan. They want $8/month for the rental but said if I get my own modem make sure it has DOCSIS3.0

I've searched through a few threads and done some reading about all of that. However, my question is what are my best options:

Using their modem that is DOCSIS3.0 ready(and ofc getting a wireless modem to connect to it, unless it has wifi, not yet known).

Buying my own DOCSIS3.0 modem and using a router(assuming any basic $50 router will work without problems/keep up).

Or buy a DOCSIS3.0 modem that has built-in wifi?

I don't mind renting, I just want the best possible connection I can get because I've been through HELL the past 4 years with windstream, fuck that company.

:beer;

Who's the cable ISP? Then we can recommend a modem.

I recommend a modem and a separate router, not a modem combo

oh sorry, cableone.

i just didn't know if i went and bought a new cable modem with DOCSIS3.0 if i would need to buy a new router to meet any new requirements or if i could use my old linksys/cisco wireless router.

Cableone supported modems: http://support.cableone.net/app/answers/detail/a_id/765/~/cable-modem-models

You can use your old router. The router doesn't care about DOCSIS or whatever. Depending on the age of the router, a new one might help experience the new speeds.

I currently use a Motorola SB6120, I have Comcast. I have been happy, the modem cost me $50 over a year ago. I bought my own be Comcast kept raising the lease or "rental" price.

edit, looked at the internet only modems as i don't need phone.

those are reasonable.

think i'm just going to pick up a used DOCSIS3.0 modem for under $50.

it's either that or pay the $8 which comes to $48 dollars for renting the modem for 6 months.

Just don't buy it off of ebay. There's a thread about someone that bought a 6121, I think it was, and Comcast refused to provision it, saying it was stolen. Turns out, it was. Was sold in a retail box and everything.

Edit: At DSLR, in the Comcast forum. Recent thread.

10/100 and B/G only? Why be stuck a decade behind the times? There are plenty of decent Gigabit/N routers in the $50-$75 range.

you're right, i am behind the times.

i'm going to look at my local BB tonight unfortunately and see what they have, i hate to go to brick and mortar but need it asap.

thanks guys
