Cable modem question...

I just got this thing installed (and I'm loving it). However, I noticed it doesn't work right when I plug it into my hub (SOHOWare 5port 10/100).

I know about these cable/dsl routers, and these should fix my problem, right? Please let me know about the specifics, as I'm not sure I should buy one unless it will cover all my needs 🙂

Oh, and tell me why it won't work with a hub 🙂
 
You can't just plug it into a hub. You would need to plug it into a router or a computer. That computer would then need another NIC to go to the hub
 
you can plug it into a Hub if you use uplink. The rj45 from the cable modem goes to the uplink port on your hub, then you plug your computer into one of the other ports

First off, What are your needs?
Do you have multible computers that need to share the connection?
Are you able to pay for multible IP addresses?

1) If you have multible IP addresses and want all the computers in your house to have access to the internet, simply use the hub's uplink port or use a crossover cable to plug the cable modem into the hub. Then assign the ip addresses provided by the cable company to each computer.

2) If you only have 1 computer, or only need 1 computer to be connected to the internet, you can still use the hub, However only the computer who has the cable company provided IP address will beable to access the internet.

3) A cable/dsl router functions as a NAT, sharing the connection using one IP for all the computers connected to it.
 
I don't care for multiple IP addresses (externally).

I just want all my computers in my house to be able to use the cable connection I paid for. That's about it 🙂

So I guess the DSL/Cable router will do it.. What's a good one to buy? I was particularly interested in the Linksys one, as it has a built in switch, so I can do some file transfers and things.
 
I got a cable modem, I got a 10/100 5port switch, I got three computers hooked up to the 10/100 5port switch, I got sygate handling it for me, works great 🙂
 
you can choose the software or hardware solution. The software way is cheaper,but requires to you have to software running on a machine all the time etc (when you want to use it). A hardware solution does not require you to worry about the machines uptime. Both do the job fine, it just depends on what you have to use (computer wise)
 
I picked up a Linksys 4-port switched DSL/Cable router with a firewall that does DHCP and NAT (which, I believe, means that it dynamically assigns IP address to all the computers behind the router and lets you share one external IP address with the outside world. It was ~US$160 from mwave.com. Works great with my @Home cable modem and lets me share one cable modem with my 3 computers.

Edit: Actually, they make a 1-port one meant to be plugged into a hub that does the same thing for only $90 (again, from mwave.com - who I've found to be very reliable in the dozen or more times that I've purchased from them).
