I hooked up Adelphia HSI and am leasing modem. I saw one for $25 at Dlink.
That was DOCSIS 1.0. Whats the difference between DOCSIS 1.0 and 2.0.
My current modem provided by Adelphia is DOCSIS 2.0. If I buy a DOCSIS1.0 Dlink DCM100
would that be compatible with Adelphia ? The Dlink modem isn't in the preferred modem list of Adelphia. Should I get this one or buy an expensive $60+ one. What do you say ?

Do the math... How long will you have the service * how much you pay. Is it less than buying? Hint: you can get them free or cheap after rebates at many stores if you sign up in store.

Buy

Check out Best Buy and Circuit City they usually offer them for free, $49 or $79.

After 1-2 years it will practically pay for itself.

A DOCSIS 1.0 modem might not work if their network runs DOCSIS 2.0.

I have already started Adelphia. Now should I cancel and start up again with circuit city ?

From the reports I have read, any of the D-Link modems aren't all that great (check BBR).

One can typically find the Motorola SURFboard (very well reviewed) for the range Ross specifies above. Less if entering a new contract.

make sure your cable company credits you for having your own modem. i had to call and get my bill adjusted for the past few months from time warner after i returned their modem. your bill should be at least 3 bucks cheaper with your own modem.

i think the free ones at CC and bestbuy are for new customers only.

just a guess here, but adelphia might only have firmware for the modems they specify. i don't know if that's covered in the DOCSIS specification, but it might be manufacturer-specific.

ive had cable internet since 1998 and back then they were "free" to lease but when Comcast bought out MediaOne in my area the started charging us $5 a month and just out of lazieness weve been paying for the past 3 years, however i just picked up a motorola5100 off ebay a few weeks back for $30 shipped, so i guess thats the end of that
