My cable modem works fine in my main computer, its a samsung that connects using rj-45 to a nic card inside the computer. I unplugged the rj-45 cable from my main, plugged it into my old computer that is running win98se, with a pci nic card. I unplug the cable modem, plugged it back in. Goto start menu, run, winipcfg, hit release, then renew. Nothing. It still has the local 162. address. In nic options I have tcp/ip installed, and its set to get ip from server just like my primary computer. When i plug the cable modem back into my main computer it works fine. What do I need to do to get it to work on my secondary computer? I'd call tech support, but their closed and I need to get this thing running tonight.

What cable service do you have?
Does the service allow more than one pc on at a time?
Does the cable modem register the MAC address of your nic to get an IP from the cable DHCP server?

All things we could need to know .....

Try this out and see if it works...

Unplug the cable modem and let it sit for about 3-5 minutes...
Plug the LAN cable to your PC in, then plug the cable modem back into your power strip...see if it works...

Some cable companies (like mine here=Adelphia) only allow one connected PC at a time...to make sure you cant just buya hub/switch to get around this the cable modem gathers your MAC address and the assigns you an IP based upon it, that way when you plug in another PC it gets the MAC address again...sees that it isnt the same as the one it got an IP for earlier and thus doesnt hand you a new IP.
usually (for me anyway) shutting down the modem clears the saved MAC address and allows me to put another PC on the modem...

Give it a shoot...:)

You can still use a router to hook up more then 1 computer. Clone the mac Addy and you should be all set.

I recently encountered the exact same problem, it turn out it was my old 3com nic, but it was isa. Once I replaced it everything worked fine.

It only allows one computer hooked up, it matches the ip to the mac and stores it. I left it unplug for a good 5mins and nothin, I called the basic tech support and they said I gotta leave her unplugged for 45mins, that seems like an awful amount of time. The guy was going to clear it for me, but I need to switch back and forth. Is there anyway to clear it faster? Shouldn't the ram clear as soon as the power is interrupted?

The problem is not on your end. The problem is the router tables on your cable company's end. Of course your cablemobem will clear the info from it as soon as you powercycle it. But the router that your cable goes back to already has the MAC address in it. And it sounds like they have it setup to recycle that every 45 minutes.

I was having that exact same problem when switching from my desktop to my laptop. I spent $10.00 for another NIC and set up ICS and viola, browsing on both computers. Best part is I can have both of them going at the same time without having to use the same computer name and without having to swap cables.
