Lost another router on the 1st thunderstorm of the year tonight.
Electrical charge thru my outdoor POE camera from lightening strike.
( I heard the modem "pop" noise,, then the TV screen went off ,, yes F*kyea .. almost lost my $2,000 TV from an 80 dollar roof HD antenna. )

Anyway, so my SBG6580 still has the WiFi working.
( what I am using now )
And as luck has it ... my new MSI MB has WiFi also ....

All the router ports are dead - no lights.

So, I think I should separate the devices again....

A modem and a separate router.
I've had some performance issues with the Motorola.

ISP = xfinity ( blast - 230 down - 12 Up )
( so I dont necessarily need a GB modem yet - i seem to kill routers every 2 years )
6 WiFi devices
4 wired devices

Any recommendations ...?
( future proof if possible )

Refurb SB6183 or SB6190 (Bad Intel Puma chipset) for $40?
The sb6190 puma issue is a non-issue in my experience.
I have 2x 6190s running on two ends of a 24x7 ipsec tunnel across the entire country and it works great and has for years.

The two modems are on different ISPs and were even purchased from 2 different sources--one I bought brand new at Best Buy, and one I picked up used for a song from someone that didn't want to use it because of the supposed problems.

I would go with the 6190 for its ability to run almost anything comcast has besides the gig plan (one of my 6190s is on the comcast 600/15 plan).

They have a compatibility page.

The TP-LINK TC-7620 is on the list.

It looks like a perfect fit for my current bandwidth.

Any thoughts ?

Oh, anyone got an idea to keep the surges out of my routers ?
( BTW - I passed my HD antenna thru my home theater surge protection now. )

This is the 2nd router killed by my TrendNet TV-IP310PI outdoor camera.
Using Power over Ethernet (PoE) Injector TPE-103I

This camera still works.
And, I'm not sure how the surges are not killing the camera or PoE unit.

A lot of UPS units have a network port for surges. I would try one of those, but honestly if the voltage is coming in from a nearby lightning strike it's doing to damage something.

If looking at something like that, I'd rather get the APC version:

Lots of good ideas and use cases in the reviews on that link too.
