cable modem losing connection

i am running vista ultimate 64 bit with service pack 1. all i have to do is unplug the cable modem and plug it back in. it has done this 3-4 times the last week or so. never had any problems before that with it. is the modem going bad?

here is the rest of what event viewer says -
The IP address lease 67.43.99.16 for the Network Card with network address 001D7D9C85E1 has been denied by the DHCP server 192.168.100.1 (The DHCP Server sent a DHCPNACK message).

i own my own modem so that is not an option. i am thinking it might be the built in network card on my motherboard. not real sure though.

Check out the DLink's status page and see what it says (or even if you can talk to it):

a) Manually set the IP address of your computer to (IP address) 192.168.100.2 / (subnet mask) 255.255.255.0 . Don't worry about DNS or Default Gateway settings in this case.
b) Hook the PC directly to the cable modem
c) Use your web browser to view http://192.168.100.1

You should see error logs and status pages there.

Actually...before you do that, how about issuing the "IPCONFIG /ALL" command in an MSDOS Prompt window? List the results here.

It sounds like you have a DHCP server on your network that you don't know about, this could be a SOHO router or something like that. It's address is 192.168.100.1.

This DHCP server sent out a Negative acknogledment because this dhcp server has a scope of 192.168.100.0 running on it which is not the same address space as your 69.x.x.x public IP.

-edit-
Or it's possible that the provider has something going on, so as suggested remove any gear and plug directly into the modem. If still symptom call provider.

i have no router or nothing hooked up. straight into ethernet port on motherboard.

Did the problem just start happening randomly or was there any changes in hardware/software on your side?

192.168.100.1 is a special ip address for cable modems. It's used to view information from the cable modem on the local side. When my modem has problems, it'll assign my router an ip address of 192.168.100.10 or something like that. You might want to discuss your issue with a level 2 technician at the cable company.

there were no changes at all. the only thing i can think of is that the cable was cut off when there was a car wreck that took out some poles and interrupted service for 8 hours or so. it come back up on its own but then a few days later the problems started.

I would definitely talk to someone about this. They may not notice there is a problem. So if you don't raise their awareness to the problem, they're going to think everything is ok. Just chat them up and be nice, and I think they'll help you figure it out.

well i called cable company and he looked at my signal and so forth and said he seen nothing wrong and that my signal strength was real good. well 1 hour later my cable modem had big fit. i found out how to access my error log for the modem and seen this listed -
