alright check it out, i have a cable modem, one ip, on a switch that lets me hook two comps up, but only one gets the inet until i get a router, and the other day i got a virus, i cried, dealt with it, and formatted, (funlove virus btw) and it was picked up by norton antivirus on win98 se AFTER the format, but on the other comp! and then the other day i go to shut down and ask i have one user connected and it will disconnect him, but the ither comp is off, i look under netwatcher and there is "aero" user connected, i quickly boot him, and am shocked

1. first, how did he get me ip, i dont piss that many people do i?
2. second, could he be cause of virus (funlove) or is the boot sector meesed up, according to norton its not, or is it just stupid, which is what i think, when i run norton on the second where the virus is coming from it says its clean?
my hd is read only with password, how safe am i, and now am running norton inet security on some levels...should this be enough?

Agreed... Use www.grc.com to see how WIDE open you are.

Chances are the intruder is a neighbor kid that was peeking at every address on your "cable network". He most likely found your address a week or more before he began to screw with your system. YES, he could have placed the file in your computer. There are many ways he could have done it(too many to list).

However, you can protect your system for as little as $100.00 --to-- $0.00 dollars.

$100.00--get a linksys router(they have a built-in hardware firewall)
$0.00--download many of the firewall/security warning programs

Without "some" type of protection you have only 2 options.
1) keep your system off, or monitor access constantly.
2) download a special .exe that when activated will screwup his system(and hope he takes the bait).

Good Luck...
