Cable Modem Ethernet connection

Do cable modems connecting through nics require a router? The modem in question is a Linksys BEFCMU10 VER.2

If you're making a direct connection from the cable modem to your NIC, then you don't need a router. If you want to share your internet connection, then a router would be the easiest way to do so. Make sure the cable modem is supported by your ISP. Hope this helps (I didn't really understand your question )

Ojai, I basically wanted to know if I could connect the cable modem directly to the pc using ethernet or if I had to have a router between them.

The NIC's fine, the modem works, cable's fine...must be the ISP!

Something is missing. What isn't fine? Have you called your ISP and asked them to see if your modem shows - and have them ping you? There are some settings that need to be done as well.

Have you changed the cable? Or are you still using the one they gave you?

Thorin: using the cable that came with it.

The modem's not with me, was bought as part of a rig I built for a friend. I asked him to have them run some diagnostics but haven't heard back yet.

Corky: can't think of anything else. Cable, modem, NIC, ISP...oh and the actual cable cable. Haven't tested that myself, but will ask him to.
