Cable Modem Disconnects

I have broadband cable access. A couple of months ago I started to get a "Network cable unplugged" error. My Internet access would be disconnected and a few minutes later it would be fine again. It has gotten progressively worse since then. Now my access shuts down about 30 min after I reboot and will stay down.

I replaced my Ethernet adapter with an NIC card and all my Ethernet cables with no change. My ISP has checked the line and replaced the modem with no change.

I disconnected my computer at the modem and put another computer on line. The access works fine. This tells me that the problem is in my computer somewhere.

I have run McAfee Anti-virus and have not found any problems. I also run behind a McAfee firewall.

When the connection goes down, I can go to Network Connections and click on "repair" and that will restore the service, but only for a short time.

I am running a Belkin router using the XP networking. While running through the router, the problem mostly clears up, but still loses connections several times a day. When I connect directly to the cable modem, something makes the modem shut down and recover about every 15 min or so.

welcome to anandtech!

I've never heard of that sort of thing being caused by a hardware problem. It might be software related. I would reccomend you go to Lavasoft and download Adaware 6.0 it's alot better at finding stuff than nortan and Mcafee. I use norton and run adaware scans weekly. Sometimes a virus can do crazy stuff to your internet connection.

downlaod
install
update
scan

if that doesnt work tell us about it, we'll se what we can do to help

If you are showing network cable is unplugged, something is causing your ethernet link to go down. If it is doing it with your Belkin router and the cable modem, you might check the link speed and duplex of your network card and change those from auto and specify a speed. The Belkin should work at 100/full duplex with no problem, and some cable modems are also 100/full now, but you might even consider slowing it down to 10base.

Good Luck!
