Cable Modem/Asus problem?

My son is at college (off-campus) trying to connect to Adelphia's high-speed service. Here are the facts. He has a computer that I put together (Asus A7VI-VM and Linksys Ethernet board running Windows 98SE). It wouldn't connect to the network (via Surfboard cable modem), although the lights flashed on the ethernet board. I tried another computer I had (Asus A7S-VM with a built-in Realtek ethernet) and that wouldn't connect either. Both of these systems connected easily to my friend's DSL setup and one is currently being used on an on-campus college network by another son. So I went back to his old 233 mhz machine with an ISA Linksys board and that machine connected to the Adelphia network. Obviously, I've spent a lot of time on the phone with both Linksys and Adelphia, but no one has been able to solve this. He has tried to connect the Asus machine directly through the cable modem and through a hub, neither worked; his other four roommates have connected successfully. Have I missed something on the bios or jumpers on the Asus machines? Sorry for the long-winded essay, but any ideas would be appreciated.

Hmmm. With an Asus A7M266, a 3Com card, and a Surfboard modem, I've had no problems. I'm assuming that this particular Asus board did not have an optional LAN port built in, as some do. Perhaps your son could isolate the problem as follows: on a roommate's machine, swap the modem for the one that's working (either on the WAN side of the hub or direct) and check if the signal comes through. If so, swap the modem back and use the Linksys board, again in the roommate's machine. If it still connects, it may be something about the board.

I'm assuming also that you've checked the Asus website for any manual updates....

Hmmm... known good nic that worked with another setup..

Have you tried swapping the cable you've been using to connect to hub with one that the roomates are using, perhaps the cable is flakey ?

If that didn't do it my next move would be to completely uninstall/reinstall the nic

Thanks for the suggestions. I've tried the Asus machine on his roommate's cable, no luck. I went out and bought a new Linksys board, no luck. The main reason I'm baffled is that neither Asus' machine works on his network, but they work on other networks. And his old machine works fine on his network. That's why I'm wondering if I overlooked something on the bios or jumpers.

Perhaps try moving the linksys to a different slot as there might be a conflict. Also, I'm not exactly sure what motherboard you're referring to, but if you look on page 64 of this manual it might apply to you about using onboard LAN controllers.
