Cable Modem and Wireless router have same default IP Address

Hopefully this belongs here and not under A/V Home Theater 🙂

A friend of mine bought a new netgear router that uses the default 192.168.0.1 IP address. However, his cable modem was already using that so when we connected the new router, we received a message stating that the wireless router address would be assigned an IP of 10.0.0.1.

To this point, everything is fine...his desktop connected via hardwire to router and all of their mobile phones work with no problems.

Now for the fun part:

He also got a new Sony EX700 TV with the wireless dongle. The TV 'sees' the wireless network but cannot connect to it. Does this have anything to do with the IP change of the netgear router?

After trying the AUTO settings for the wireless connection which did not work, I tried the manual SETUP using an IP address 10.0.0.1 with a subnet of 255.255.255.0 and Primary DNS of 10.0.0.1 and it still does not connect. If it matters, I entered the wireless network info both manually (scanned available networks) and also using the WPS pin.

Any tips on how to resolve this? Thanks.

The IP change shouldn't have any adverse affects, as long as the router updated itself in other areas that mattered. Few things to check:

- Make sure DHCP is still enabled on the router and make sure it's handing out IP addresses in the 10.0.0.x range.

- When you setup the IP manually on the TV, you don't want to use 10.0.0.1 (if that's what you did), as that IP is set on the router. Use something else other than that, and something out of the DHCP range if you plan on keeping it manual.

- Can other systems connect to the wifi without issue?

yes...all three of their Iphones and mine can connect without any problems...

I will try another IP the next time I am over there...Thanks...
