Cable modem and slingbox

I just ordered an older slingbox "tuner" model. I plan on installing it at my parents house, who have basic cable with comcast. I've never had cable, so apologies for the noobish questions.

We have a cable modem as well, but it's in another room. My question is if the cable connected to the cable modem carry the basic cable tv signal? So if I split the cable coming from the outside, connect it to the cable modem and then the slingbox, would there be any issues with this? Or is the cable to the cable modem dedicated to just that?

If this is possible, do I have to buy a special splitter? Does comcast have to provide that? A splitter comes with the slingbox, but I'm not sure if that would work for me.

Any help is appreciated.

A splitter works perfectly. I have one going from my modem to the splitter; from the splitter to the sling; and from the splitter to my digi cable box. Don't buy a cheap splitter though.
