cable modem activity

I'm running a toshiba cable modem (roadrunner) and have a netgear RT314 router. There are 2 computers hooked up. When neither computer is doing any internet activity (the act lights for those two ports show NO activity) the cable modem port and the modem itself show constant activity. Any idea what this might be? Is it normal? I don't remember seeing it before. Am I getting hit by hackers or something? How would I check this?

I have a DLink router that includes firewall functions, and it keeps a log of all external access attempts by IP address and Port. Yours should also.

Could be a hacker or, like I suspect mine is, a bunch of virus infected computers pinging at random.

Since roadrunner uses DHCP, you probably are getting a lot of port calls to a web server, game, ftp, or some other application that someone else had when they had the same IP as you. Nothing to worry about, but install a firewall if you're paranoid. The main to do is make sure your netbios is turned off in the network section so nobody can hack into your file system.
