Cable Modem Activity

My cable modem activity light stays on constantly, even when there are no computers running. I am using a Linksys 4 port router.
I has started doing this the last couple weeks, and has never done it before.

The activity light on the router flashes about as fast as it possibly can. It is like there is a lot of activity going on somewhere, but that is impssible with every computer in the house turned off.

Any ideas?

Also, when the router is unplugged, the activity stops.

I just upgraded the firmware on the router also, which didn't stop it.

I wouldn't worry too much about activity lights. However, the individual lights for each system hooked up, I would watch those. If those are blinking like mad when you should be idle, you may have an intrusion, or be hitting someone with a DDOS without knowing it.

When I first got my cable modem years ago, the activity light would only flash when there was activity on my line. It was like that for years and then one day stayed lit 99% of the time. I called the cable company who told me they were doing system testing so not to worry.

Well, after calling them every week or so for months and the light always staying on I finally gave up. Since then, I have moved twice and the light always stays on. I still don't know what changed but everything works fine and I have a firewall so I know the activity is not coming from me.

The latest crop of Internet worms is what happened. Up to a couple weeks ago, my cable modem data light would only blink once in a while when nothing was going on. Now, I can just plug in the router with no computers attached, and the light blinks continuously, with only very short pauses once in a while. Nothing comes out the other side of the router, so I'm ignoring it. Welcome to the Wild West of the Internet. 😀😀😀

Another reason why you're seeing the activity is ARP requests on the cable modem segment. If I run a packet sniffer on my linux gateway router, I can see all of the ARP requests coming in from the fine folks sharing a segment with me.

The constant Flashing is a normal process with some ISPs.

Call your ISP to b sure.

AAMOF, I connected my cable modem directly to a machine and fired up Ethereal and looked at what was going on, and I'm in an ARP blizzard! 😀 I'm getting 20-30 messages a second, and 95% or more are ARP packets. Now, I understand a few of these, but something is broken back at the ranch I believe, because this just suddenly started happening after they were off-line for two days following the hurricane outage. They all seem to be originating from the local router, the box hanging from a pole up the street, so I think it's in need of a brain transplant. 😀

My cable connection is being constantly probed for open ports. Like gunrunnerjohn I now have a router and let it's firewall block the scrip kiddies. I couldn't imagine being on without some kind of firewall in use.
