Cable internet - upgrading anytime soon?

I was wondering why on earth the US is so far behind on up/dowload speeds. I have Time Warner cable with cable internet and am wondering when the next phase is coming through, mainly for UPLOAD speeds. Any clue gang?

You could also just simply call them.

What are the speeds for AT&T Triple Play? How much do you think the competitors will upgrade?

I'm tired of being limited to 256Kbs upload without having to go really expensive. 🙁

Don't know.

But I've been pounded upon by the entire AT board for the things I post about and what is going on in the industry. The crys of "the US is so far behind!!" can get nauseating at times mainly because they are spewed by the ignorant.

The lines are set and the big showdown between cable and telcos coupled with the advanced voice, video, data services are set. The consumer is gonna win BIG time.

The technology with cable is out there to offer higher upload speeds on cable. it is up to the provider and their model. They have tons of bean counters to figure it out. But the model and practices of a communications company have been set by 50+ years of development.

Bottom line - it isn't about bandwidh. Bandwidth is cheap, the management of that bandwidth and the traffic engineering versus capital outlay on the gear/operations needed is not.

I am stuck here with 73KB/s (512kbs) on a cox cable small business line. I would almost have to pay double to get double the speeds.

On my bill it says I have the 6mbps service. I usually get between 200-500kbps download, sometimes faster depending on the time I am using it. My upload I believe it 256mbps, not sure on this though. It might be 512kbps, but how do I check for that besides calling Time Warner?

You see you have the "6mbps" service. They should have it listed somewhere as to what their packages are. BTW, unless you are heavy into P2P file transfers, the larger download speeds aren't something to expect. I have the 5mbs download package and have never hit anything over 1MB/s. It's just a fact that servers out there don't have the massive upload speeds yet.

edit: I don't mean a proprietary server either. Something mainstream.

It is trivial to fill even a 45 or 100 megabit connetion.

Servers generally have multiple 600 megabit or higher connections.

Sorry, just never maxed out my download speed and I knew the bandwidth was there. The most I have got is around 800kbs from Microsoft and I had about 1.5mbs according to two download bandwidth testing sites. This has been an issue in the past so I have tested it.

Right now AT&T is rolling out VDSL, but it is currently only available in San Antonio. More markets are supposed to be available by the end of the year. Most of VDSL connection is currently reserved for video. Bandwidth packages include 6/1, 3/1 and 1.5/1. So far I am pretty pleased with the service.

I dont know if this is going to be enough to force cable to upgrade, but it should create better customer service and pricing.
