cable internet soon: what modem/security?

i cant get cable internet yet, but it should be soon as Cox communications is finishing their upgrades in the area to offer digital cable/cable internet in my town

so, i thought i might be on the lookout for a few things. first, a cable modem...which they offer for the wonderful price of 200 bucks

bah

anyway, are there any specific brands any of you would reccomend, or shy away from for any particular reasons? any features i should be looking for in specific in a cable modem, or a general price range? ive seen several in fs/t between 50 and 100 bucks, which seems a bit better than 200 as far as im concerned

and what about security? im running windows xp home, is there any good software/hardware i should get to ensure decent security without spending out the ass on it?

i really want to be ready to get my access going as soon as its available here, but dont want to make mistakes on what i purchase if i dont have to 🙂 thanks

This is just my opinion so just take it for what it is worth.
i would not want to have a always on internet connection without a router. Almost any DOCSYS modem will work. I have a Motorola Surfboard and it works OK.

Bleep

Verify with Cox that DOCSIS is all you need, and yes any DOCSIS modem will work. We have a Motorola Surfboard as well, works much much better than the old non-DOCSIS we got from Mediaone/AT&T.
