The connection light blinks when it is out and stays solid when it is on.

Im using a old 3com sharkfin modem.

Is the modem bad or is this normal for cable connections to shut off and on?

Either something is wrong with the modem or something is wrong with the cable coming into the modem. How many splitters are before the modem? Does the cable TV reception look good?

Btw wrong forum.

I did, last time they came out, the cable modem worked fine when the tech got here. They are coming out again, I told them I want a new modem.

Yeah I would probably say new modem time. The Motorolas are highly recommended.

Yeah, but you don't have the choice, you have to take what they give you.

Find out how to login to the modem diagnostic page and see what errors are being reported. Also, go over to www.broadbandreports.com and find the forum for your ISP, there's usually people there who can help.

when they get out there, have them check the line strength. I had similar problems and then they ran a dedicated line to my modem and has taken care of the problem.

did you try upgrading the firmware/driver of your cable modem (and router, if you're using one)?

I have Cox Communications and it has never been down for the year and a half that I have used them, except when Ivan came through and everything was down then.

No, Comcast

Sounds like Comcast sucks w/reliability, I have a lot of friends who lose conenction from time to time. I have Optimum Online from Cablevision and can't remember losing connection ever for the past 4 years. Same with Roadrunner, which I had for a year before that.

Tis why I dumped cable and got DSL here. Rock solid even during Katrina.
