Cable internet question

I want to sign up for Adelphia high-speed cable internet service. I have a cable jack in my home, but it is on the first floor; my computer is on the second floor. Since I will be purchasing a laptop soon, I would want to set up a wireless network. My question: What is the best way to go about this?

Would I buy a wireless router, plug it in to the cable plug on my first floor? My computer is definitely stayin on the 2nd floor, and I am not sure if it is possible to set up a wireless network without a computer on my 1st floor. Obviously, I am very confused. Any help suggestions tips advice etc would be appreciated.

Thanks!

my broadband is in my basement

i bought a SMC barricade wireless router from Microcenter

i put a wireless nic into my wife's pc in the kitchen upstairs, no problem

i use the wireless card in my laptop from all over the house, no problem

i used to be an anti-wireless LAN guy, but i have turned to the dark side

go for it

A wireless router and a wireless card.

Router stays on 1st floor with modem, computer goes wherever.

What Minendo said also it's not exactly expensive for them to install another cable outlet upstairs in case you want to move your setup to the second floor.

You do not need a computer on the 1st floor, just hook up the modem down there and connect it to the wireless router.

First of all this is the wrong forum, it belongs in networking.

This is possible. Our cable modem and wireless router are on the first floor with no computer attached(we had a laptop hooked up for the initial installation and configuration though).
