so I'm moving into an apt for school this weekend and we've decided to got with ATT for cable tv and internet (still grumbling about the $80/month bill to have tv and internet...) anyways, they're sending a guy out next wednesday to do the cable tv, but apparently the same people don't do the tv and internet - they scheduled the internet hookup for SEPT. 26TH!!!! thats over a month away!!! what do they do to "set up" the cable for the cable modem? is this something I could do myself? heck, it seems like I could apply for a installer job with ATT before the end of september rolls around heh. the CSR on the phone said the installer basically comes and does something to the wire and gives you a packet and you set things up yourself, which is fine. she also suggested I ask the tv guy and maybe he could do it and then I could just to to an ATT center and pick up a modem, but no guarantees. anyone here do any of this stuff? is it something I could do myself? i don't really wanna wait a month for good internet access!!

I know that when the TIme Warner guy came to set mine up, he asked which cable ports I'd be using, then attched some device to each one and went outside saying he had to turn them on or something. I guess it's not something you can do yourself. Setting up the modem itself is cake, but I think you need access to make the whole thing work.

Something will need to be installed on the line coming into your apartment. This is the one part of the process I don't fully understand. They also need the MAC address of the modem, but thats no big deal.

Depending on where you live and such...first thing they do is test to see if your Db strength is high enough to support cable internet. Too many splits on the line and the signal strength is low and they would need to install a fresh line for you. Secondly, they need to make sure to take off the "traps" on your line so that the band that the signal runs on will pass through. Then they call and register the modem's MAC and often your MAC with the DHCP server so that you can pull an IP. On top of that, if you don't have a NIC already, they need to give you a NIC to install(with the minimal install) or install it for you and set it up (full install).

I know it sucks, but you will have to wait. Just make sure you have a working NIC and hide your router. :p
