Hello forum gurus......long time reader first time poster.
:)

I just built a new system with a WD 74gig Raptor, I am not familiar with SATA but I did figure how to hook it up. I took the legacy power straight from the PS, then hooked up the SATA cable straight to the SATA 1 plug on the MB. My problem is that I don't know what to hook my dvd-rom too, do I hook it straight from the dvd rom to IDE 1 or IDE 2 on the MB? Does it matter? Not sure how to set up my BIOS for a SATA either. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

MSI K8N NEO2 Platinum
Athlon 64 3500+
1Gig Corsair XMS 3200
BFG 6800GT OC (just RMA'd one cooling fan not working)
WD 74G Raptor

Either IDE channel should be fine :) To get the motherboard to boot from the SATA drive, look at page 3-8 of your manual where they show the Advanced Chipset Features panel of the BIOS. You'll want to set the first device to CD-ROM and the second to your hard drive, which I think they'll be calling HDD-0. On the first go-around, press the Enter key if/when you see a Press any key to boot from CD... prompt, so it boots from your Windows CD. On the second go-around, don't, because then you want it booting from hard drive.

If you have any other hard drives, leave them out until after Windows Setup is complete. After adding more hard drives, you may have to come back and change the Hard Disk Boot Priority setting on this panel too.

Also, be certain to have the network cable disconnected until you have firewall protection, unless your WinXP CD already has Service Pack 2 (which has its firewall pre-enabled). I made a page of tips for initial and ongoing prevention of worms and viruses and that is here if you need it, with links to free firewall and antivirus software and other stuff.

For Me:

I would hook up the DVD-Rom to 2nd EIDE on Master. Its just mental thing for me to always put optical drives on the 2nd EIDE and then later on you can slap in EIDE hard drive for p#rn, mp3s, etc . It shouldn't matter though.

Serial ATA: I assume you're not looking to do RAID. Your BIOS will usually have settings for configuration just do a non RAID setup. After thisWindows will sometimes recognize your serial ata controller during the installation. If not, MSI should of have provided you a driver disk for your RAID controller. I believe during the installation of Windows XP/2k, there will be prompt for 3rd party drivers for SCSI, RAID etc. Insert the disk when prompted if the Windows Install doesn't recognize your SATA controller.

This might be convered in your MSI manual though. So always have that on the side.

Thanks for the info.
I do not intened on having multiple HD's
In my BIOS you can either ENABLE/DISABLE SATA1/SATA2 DMA transfer, does that need to be enabled with this kind of drive?

One more question, my HD is an OEM with no manual, the jumpers can be set to enable spread spectrum clocking (not sure the function of this) or I can set it to power up in standby.

Sorry guys I am not very computer wise, I'm trying to learn though!! :D
