I have a 16down/2Up Internet connection, and when running it through my Netgear WGR14v6 router the performance of it is a few Mbps slower, is there anything I can do to adjust it or will I just have to buy a new router?

What is the speed when you run your modem straight to your PC?

If it's significantly faster, you may want to look into a firmware update, tweaking router settings, or getting a new router (I recommend the WRT54GL series with DD-WRT open source firmware).

With 16Mbps down, it's possible that you are hitting a throughput limit on the router hardware itself, with how fast its processor can handle NAT transactions. Newer firmware may help if the limitation is in software.

Comcast is my Isp, I get 10-12Mbps down and without the router I get the full 16Mbps

You should try a newer more modern Router, it seems that the Router's WAN port can not handle the 16Mb/sec.

You should also check the Router's MTU, it might be off.

The routers MTU is set at 1500, hey Jack, could you recommend a good home networking book? one that covers installation/repair/wiring of coax,Ethernet etc.?

I get this question many times and it is impossible to give good answers.

There are books that give overall tutorial about Home Networking, but they do not cover any specific topic on a functional level (like how to make a coax cable etc.).

An example wiring, if you need real knowledge of wiring you have to find a specific book dealing directly wiring infrastructure as a topic.

As a very basic introductory for Home networking this is an interesting book.

For a specific topic you either buy a specific book or you search the Internet for instructions , or How to.

Example: Need to install Keystones jacks, http://www.9thtee.com/networkingts.htm

Home Wiring, http://www.9thtee.com/homewiring.htm

Coax, http://www.cornerhardware.com/howto/ht051.html

Site like: http://www.practicallynetworked.com/

http://www.ezlan.net> Can be searched for specific topics.

Microsoft has a lot of info concerning Windows Networking, http://www.microsoft.com/windo...etworking/default.mspx

Wow! thanks :).
I see from your information, what I'm looking for is the hardware end, making cables, coax with compression fittings, running lines and picking out hardware. I can get all of my software config. info online.
