It all about Directv! Most of the members here will agree with me on this one. They only use cable for broadband.

If you've seen digital cable..

it compares well with direct Tv.. and it's much cheaper

I've noticed cable is generally a bit cheaper and easier if you want to run it to more than one room. I believe with a dish you have to get 2 receivers if you want the signal in another room.

I had Direct TV for several years while living in the county. Now I moved to town and have cable. The cost is about the same. There are a lot more channels on Direct TV than my cable company and many more pay per view movies to pick from. The deciding factor was a ten dollar discount every month for having both cable tv and @home internet service.

If you have a good cable provider, digital cable is good. It's the same as DTV, except it doesn't crap out during storms (well, not really important if you live in California, but here during winter it can be a pain). It's also usually cheaper.

I know it is possible to descramble allmost all analog (scrambled) Pay-TV channels in Europe with your PC, a TV-Tuner card and some software (MoreTV, ExoTV, HVCPlus etc).

Is this possible in the US too?

The scrambling system used in the US seems to be much simpler (and thus easier to descramble) than the ones used in Europe (you can see/guess much more of the real picture in the US than in Europe...). I would appreciate it if you could tell me what program I need and where I can find this program and maybe where I can get more information on this...
...also if someone has a tv-tuner-card (with a BT878 or BT848 chip, like a Hauppauge etc.) and is willing to try this out I can point him to some links.
I would really appreciate it because then I would get myself a nice TV-Tuner for my Laptop ;)

Really? that's the first i heard of it. I remember last year (or maybe it was 2 yrs ago?) the MURC forum had some people that were REALLY trying to do that, but weren't able to.

No such thing... go to alt.dss.hack and see if you can come up with anything. The problem is the decryption code, which hasn't been cracked yet.

But really, how would it work? How would you send the satellite signal to your computer? Then you would have to decrypt the code, then send it back to the receiver (how would you do that? i imagine you'll need to have some emulated smartcard). For all that work, including a mid-range computer, you can get a fully emulated system for about $400.

When he says free DTV, I think he's talking about the free HDTV signals you can get using certain DirecTV receivers.

IMHO, my DirecTV looks way better than my brother's digital cable. User interface is way better too!

No BDawg, I'm pretty sure he meant free as in I ain't paying one gosh durn cent, free. It would seem that I've been lied to because I was told this could no longer be done.

I am talking about the analog scrambled Pay-TV Channels you get when you have basic cable or so.
I mean HBO, etc.!
I mean those channels where you see a scrambled picture!
In Europe it is possible to decode them and watch them on your PC or even on your TV (if you have a TV-Out option)!
Those programs work like the standard TV-Tuner Software that came with your TV-card!
I don't know how the mods would like it but if it is okay I can post you some links where to download the software and stuff. (Otherwise send me a PM and I will mail it to you).

(In order to do this you MUST be able to watch the scrambled picture with your standard TV_Tuner Software)
