Cable connection dropping, Software/virus related?

My cable connection seems to be dropping at random intervals although only for a few seconds. It's a motorola SB5100 that I just received from Comcast along with their "lightning fast" internet service. What good is lightning if you can't harness it's power. Anyway, My machine is a fresh install with the most up-to-date version of XP, Spybot, MacAffee, and Zonealarm. I have only been online for about a week but have been experiencing this since day one.

It usually drops (as in one or up to three lights on the modem turn off) when I'm accessing the internet through firefox or internet explorer. It reconnects (all lights are back up solid, activity light flashing) within seconds, although sometimes I have to reboot my machine to get online. Firefox displays at the bottom, resolving host at comcast......... or something like that. Internet explorer detects proxy settings for a while, then says page cannot be displayed. I can't understand why it's random though. sometimes I can surf for an hour, going in and out of firefox or internet explorer without any problems. It almost seems like a problem with the modem or Comcast but they say all is normal. I had a tech come out to investigate and he couldn't find anything because it didn't act up in the 20 minutes he was here. All settings appeared normal on my end and on theirs.

I don't know what other information can be useful in this post but will gladly provide anyone with more details if they can help me resolve this issue.

The questions I have are:

Is it a possible software or virus issue?
Did Comcast just give me a crappy modem?
Why are my problems so sporadic when I'm trying the same things over and over?

I've gone to http://192.168.100.1/ to examine my cable modem settings etc. and they are all normal except when it's kicking off (lights are coming on and off).

Thanks in advance for any advice or answers! I have to get this fixed before EQ2 comes out =P

I asked the rep from Comcast about that. She didn't sound very knowledgeable. I'm not sure if there is any available, I thought that was up to the cable company?

I'm with Comcast also, and have the same problem. It started about a month ago when they started new tiers, and started charging for multiple comps connected. IMO it's something they did to their network to accomodate these new things, but they won't admit it.

I've run every spyware/trojan finder/etc looking for a problem and have found none. A tech came out and ended up running an entire new line from the street directly to my cable modem, and it did squat...same problem.

I'm sick of calling them and looking into getting another ISP. People are complaining on this on the Comcast boards, but they still insist you need to powercycle your modem, because it couldn't possibly be on their end...

This indicates your problem is either a bad modem (fairly unlikely) or an issue with the RF to/from your modem. When you browsed the internal page what were the signal levels?

My levels are this: (unless in the middle of one of it's hissy fits)....

Downstream:
Frequency-633000000Hz Locked
Signal to Noise Ratio-37dB
Power Level--5dB

Upstream:
Channel ID-3
Frequency-23000000Hz Ranged
Power level-37dBmV

I've recently installed the driver for USB connection and we'll see if that makes a difference....still no luck thus far though =(

I don't know if switching to USB made the difference, or if it was always a Comcast problem, but it seems to be fixed at this point. Thanks Spherrod for the driver download!

I'm also looking for updated firmware for the SB5100. Anyone w/info... please pass it on.

spherrod: that link you posted was for the latest version of the drivers for using the USB interface.
